Report from Mark -

Bernan and Water Music were away from the Beaufort docks by 0645 in order to take advantage of a favorable tide. As we entered the Morehead City channel, we encountered a 56 foot Hatteras being chased up and down the channel by a helicopter! The chatter on the radio informed us that the helicopter was filming the Hatteras—until the Hatteras reported engine problems and returned to the Beaufort docks!. Bernan and Water Music proceeded up the channel and into Core Creek with a nice push from the tide. Up tha Crick left a bit later, but had nearly caught up with the trawlers by the time they entered Northwest Creek. By mid-day the 2008 Southern Cruise had come to an end. An “after glow” party is planned for next week, however, so there will be one more opportunity for the Southern Cruisers to get together and reminisce on a most interesting three weeks on the water.

Report from Bernie -

When we left the docks at Beaufort Docks at 7 AM we witnessed an large white fast boat speeding into the Inlet toward Radio Island as we approached the south end of Radio island.  The fast boat was being followed by a black colored helicopter and when the white boat slowed down in the MC Port turning basin the helicopter circled the boat several times.  Nancy immediately said " we should slow down because it appeared that the chopper was about to open fire on the fast boat just like in CSI-Miami?"  So I did slow down and then the white boat turned around and sped out the inlet again at high speed and the chopper followed.   Again the boat came back into the inlet with the chopper following.  Just then on Ch 72 we heard" Chopper Chopper, Where are you going?"  The Chopper answered "White Boat, I cannot shoot anymore, I am having engine problems.  I have to leave the scene".  White boat asked "Did you get any video shots?"  Chopper said "yes" and sped away.  The White boat called Beaufort Docks and asked permission to dock the new 57 Hatteras to drop off the new owners!!! WOW. The Teuberts and Wests were relieved!!

I hope you have enjoyed the travelogue.   Thanks to all my fellow cruisers who contributed to the reporting and picture taking.             Janet, webmaster
