MAY 8

DAY 1

Fairfield Harbour to River Dunes Yacht Club

Well, the Northern Cruise is officially underway.   Can't tell you who exactly left this morning, but they should have a great day cruising to River Dunes Yacht Club.

Your travelogue'r' Janet, is still at
home getting ready and plans to depart on Saturday.  Karen Meyer will be reporting on today's activities and her report will be posted on Saturday
or Sunday.

Remember, I can only post reports if I have internet access.   Most marinas these days do supply this courtesy but if you don't see a report from time to time... don't panic.

The 2009 FHYC Northern Cruise began on time, May 8, from  many docks in the Harbour. The fleet included Bernan, Cameo, Annie Girl, Marlyn, Maturity Rules, Jolie Blond, Up the Crick and Aqua Base.   “Just Because”  rose from the bottom at its dock to join the fleet on the path to our first port of call, River Dunes.   The weather had fair winds and 1-2 foot seas as everyone headed down the Neuse.  It was an easy day with no need for speed.  So, our FH Fishing Club Bursar, (Walt) slowed his speed to 4.6 knots after passing Oriental and put a couple of trolling lines in the water.  He immediately caught a small Bluefish and later a Spanish Mackeral.  Both were released so they could be caught after growing up.

After everyone safely docked, even without Captain Ken’s normal assistance, people enjoyed the pool and a tour of the 2007 Coastal Living Dream House.  At the close of the tour, Bill and Donna were discussing their plans to purchase the house.  They need the market to come back up (considerably!!) and are looking for a few donations.  They are trying to decide whether they can afford a whole room or just a couple of closets.

Bernie had his usual intelligently organized and well run captains’ meeting (with group 1 supplied appetizers) where weatherman Paul expounded on the changing weather forecasts.  We decided to tentatively set off early Saturday,
pending the next 4:30 AM revised weather forecast.  Paul accepted the responsibility to listen and update the fleet.

The River Dunes restaurant is open Thursday-Sunday for residents and boaters. All boaters enjoyed a great dinner at sunset before retiring to their respective boats.
