FIRST AID

LIST of
DRUGS AND SUPPLIES

This is a suggested on-board medical kit. Check with your physician for substitutes if you are allergic to any of the suggested medications. For offshore passages, a much more elaborate kit will be needed. Some injectables have been included for those trained to use them.

DRUGS


A. WOUNDS

A&D OINTMENT-For local application to chronic sores and rashes

BACITRACIN OR NEOSPORIN OINTMENT-Antibiotic ointments for infected wounds

BETADINE SOLUTION-For cuts and abrasions

DOMO BORO-Dissolve in water as a soak or compress for open wounds or abscesses (Can substitute 2 tablespoons of salt in warm water).

FURACIN OINTMENT-For burns

CORTISONE OINTMENT-For itchy rashes or other inflammatory skin lesions.

B. NAUSEA, VOMITING, SEASICKNESS

KARO SYRUP-Two tablespoons as needed for nausea or beginning seasickness. May be used alone or with bread, coffee, etc.-repeat as necessary

ANTIVERT, BONAMINE-For seasickness or nausea. Ephedrine and phenergan, 1 tablet of each taken together also for seasickness (used by the astronauts)

TRANSDERMV EAR PATCH-Place one behind ear. Good for three days. Try at home before voyage to guard against possible side effects, such as drowsiness or disorientation - ½ patch may be used.

COMPAZINE SUPPOSITORIES-For vomiting when patient cannot hold anything in stomach. Will also be good for anxiety or to produce sleep.

C. ALLERGIC REACTIONS

PYRIBENZAMINE OR BENADRYL - Take as directed for rashes, drug reactions, insect stings, food allergies, etc., also for sleep

ADOLPHS MEAT TENDERIZER - Apply locally as poultice.

MEDROL DOSPAC-- (CORTISONE) - For more severe allergic reactions or more persistent allergic symptoms.

INJECTABLE ADRENALIN - For people who are so allergic to things such as bee stings that they can go into shock. Comes ready for immediate use.

D. PAIN

ASPIRIN OR TYLENOL - 2 tablets every 3 to 4 hours. Regular aspirin, 1 or 2 tables for any sudden chest pain.

EMP.COMP. #3 OR TYLENOL#3 - For more severe pain. Contains codeine. There are stronger narcotics. See physician for an Rx.

E. INFECTION

ANTIBIOTICS - Oral antibiotics must be prescribed by your physician. Whatever antibiotic is prescribed, the full dose must be taken.

F. SEDATIVES

VALIUM - 5mg. Tablets for nervousness, sedation, erratic behavior, convulsions, muscular relaxation, such as after a fracture.

G. MISCELLANEOUS DRUGS

DONNATOL - Relaxes gastro-intestinal spasms, cramps

IMMODIUM - For diarrhea

ANTACIDS - Tums, Prilosec, Zantac, Pepto-Bismol

CALADRYL - Rashes, poison ivy, etc.

SALT TABLETS - Enteric coated. Take as directed with plenty of water for heat related exhaustion, weakness, malaise, etc.

MILD LAXATIVES - For constipation

COLD TABLETS AND DECONGESTANTS - Contac, Sinutabs

SUN BLOCK - The higher the number, the better.

TONGUE DEPRESSORS - Used as finger splints

          STERILE SUTURE KIT - Prepackaged with instruments
          (for those trained to use them)
